45 :One Tough Guy:2005/07/21(木) 15:09:51
I'm such a great fighter. Let me tell you how well I fight.

Once, while attending a party in the parking lot of an abandoned
movie theater, I got into a fight with an entire gang of bikers
called "The Cobras."

There were about twenty of them, each a mountain of a man with
tough scars and tattoos, and they came at me all at once. Some
were bare-handed, but others hade crude weapons like a broken
beer bottles, baseball bats, and chains.

It didn't scare me one bit.

I used every ounce of strength, courage, and determination I
had, and I beat the entire gang in less than five minutes! When
the dust had settled, they were all unconscious and piled onto
each other and I was unscratched.

I'm that great of a fighter.

Hey, guys, it's pretty lame for you guys to use derogatory words
especially if you can't use English properly.

Just imagine a foreigner calling you "Kusottare" or whatever
in really bad Japanese, and that's what you guys are doing.
So if you want to use F-words or like, you need to learn
the language better, or you guys will look pretty stupid.

But then again, only idiots would use such foul language...

huhn.

>>46
I totally agree with you.
And this thread could give more to those who want to learn English in earnest
if guys like you join us.

49 :One Tough Guy:2005/07/21(木) 15:35:13
>>48
To be honest, I lied about that. I've never been in a fight
ever. In fact, I took a class in boxing once, and the sandbag
gave me a busted lip and a black eye, and I hadn't even punched
it yet.

I'm such a wimp.

>>49
haha. But I enjoyed your "story" all the same.
Can I ask you a question? You are a native speaker of English, right?
Your English is too natural to be a non-native speaker of English.

>>53
I noticed one. "hade" should be corrected to "hid", right?
But I didn't notice any other than this.
Anyway, your mistakes are nothing compared to our awkard English.

I myself once wanted to be a boxer, but when I realized that I might be hit instead of
only hitting somebody, I quit. lol

CHIVALRY is a flower no less indigenous to the soil of Japan than its emblem,
the cherry blossom; nor is it a dried-up specimen of an antique virtue preserved
in the herbarium of our history. It is still a living object of power and beauty
among us; and if it assumes no tangible shape or form, it not the less scents the
moral atmosphere, and makes us aware that we are still under its potent spell.
The conditions of society which brought it forth and nourished it have long
disappeared; but as those far-off stars which once were and are not, still continue
to shed their rays upon us, so the light of chivalry, which was a child of feudalism,
still illuminates our moral path, surviving its mother institution. It is a pleasure
to me to reflect upon this subject in the language of Burke, who uttered the well-known
touching eulogy over the neglected bier of its European prototype.

I think that if I could live as a gorilla in a zoo -one of those
modern zoos with the large enclosures, mind you- I think I could be
happy. Of course, I would miss television, driving my car, and
indoor plumbing. Not to mention being able to eat meat. Plus, if I
were in zoo, I would have to deal with a bunch of idiots staring
at me all day....

You know, nevermind I said anything about being a gorilla. I think
I'll just go rent some movies and pick up a meatball sandwich on the
way back home.

As you can see I love artistic culture very much indeed.

i love literature, though i haven't read much lately.
and i love music and movies.
mozart is my favorite composer and billy wilder is my favorite director.

>>106
Mozart is a marvelous composer. His requiem never fails to touch my heart.
J. S. Bach is my favourite composer. In fact I was listening his Matthew's Passion
just a while ago. Though I do not pay much attention to the words being sung,
I feel spiritual purification there.
I am a bit tired today.

>>107
oh, i love back, too. most of what i hear, however, is piano tunes.
matthew's passion... i haven't heard it. of course that's not because i don't like religious music,
but because music like that is somewhat long. i don't take enough time to listen deeply to
that kind of music. but i want to listen to it someday.

109 :Urban Predator:2005/07/23(土) 00:53:13
>>108
Johannes-Passion is a grave piece of religious music as well.
The aria part of Alto penetrates my heart singing:

Von den Stricken meiner Sunden
Mich zu entbinden,
Wird mein Heil gebunden;
Mich von allen Lasterbeulen
Vollig zu heilen,
Last er sich verwunden.

[In English]
To free me
from the bond of my sin
my Saviour is bound.
He gives his body to be wounded
to heal the infection
of my wickedness.
──────────
Although I am not a Christian, this passage strikes me with an austere sense of
Christian-like selfless love.

i'm not a christian, either.
but i respect jesus. i think he was a revolutionary.
he revolutionized jewish religion, the social structure at that time and the way of thinking about
how human being could passionately rel;ate to the poor and the sick.

and bach expressed these essences, especially the last one so nobly in his music.
that makes us get out of, however temporay it maybe, usual selves and feel the love of jesus
i think that's an amazing thing.

Oi, oi! Sorry I haven't been checking in very often, but I have to work a lot before
school starts next month. Can't believe I'm already a sophomore! Still don't have a major.
I'm already planning to go back to Ireland and France next summer; I had so much fun in
Europe. Need to save up more money--it's so expensive over there... But, HOLY CRAP, Disneyland
Paris has WAY better rides than over here in Florida! Space Mountain is absolutely killer.
Have any of you ever seen http://www.engrish.com? That's funny stuff, man. Oh, I was wondering,
for those of you who live in Japan: Do they have (American) football video games over there?
Because one of the new commercials for one of those games features my school and I thought
it was pretty cool. FSU!!! And, btw, I'm really sick of reading about this Yukorin character.
Get over it, dude. Anyway, I'm going to sleep. A bientot!

Dwaine is this american english teacher who would come here and complain
about how he could not get a date. he would also try to use
this board to attract women. Then he made up several names to
use but it was always easy to tell that it was him. now it seems
that he doesn't come here. or maybe he just acts annoymous like
everyone else now.

the saying "fuck off Dwaine" became a kind of greeting here

Once in a while you will encounter a really big one.
We Japanese expect the next big one almost as devastating
as the famous the Great Kanto Earthquake to occur within the next thirty years.

i don't know if i should be offended at the use of "chousen" vs "kankoku".
don't act like i can't read that.

if you're born in America, there are issues that arise pertaining to what you describe your "nationality" as.
maybe to you, an "American" is someone who is white. but in fact, those peoples' ancestors came over from Europe or other countries..
because of this, many Asians born in America describe themselves as Chinese-American, Japanese-American, etc..
this helps them retain both their heritage and their identity as Americans.

with that in mind, i'm both American and Korean, if that makes any sense to you.

Theme song lyrics from the 1980's sitcom The Great American Hero

"Believe it or Not" by Joey Scarbury

Look at what's happened to me
I can't believe it myself
Suddenly I'm on top of the world
Shoulda been somebody else

Believe it or not I'm walking on air
I never thought I could feel so free
Flying away on a wing and a prayer

Who could it be?
Believe it or not it's just me

Just like the light of a new day
It hit me from out of the blue
Breaking me out of the spell I was in
Making all of my wishes come true

Believe it or not I'm walking on air
I never thought I could feel so free
Flying away on a wing and a prayer

Who could it be?
Believe it or not it's just me

Why are Japanese so afraid of using English?
Most would be able to keep a normal conversation,
especially if the person they were talking to
used a bit simpler English than usually.

I have studied English for 6 years, and some
say it has gotten as good as a native American's.
The success all lies in my constant usage of
the English language.

I am a kind of new here, so I don't know the original (ie posting on 2ch)...
That's the only way to tell if it's real or not, i think.
But TV show is making it look like otaku's wet dream.

>>246
i haven't watched it yet, but you can read the original threads from the link below.

i hear a lot of people say it's a fake. but i think it's real.

It's first time to be here. nice to meet you.

approximately yes.
i hear they made some corrections to the book, such as correcting typos or leaving off AAs.
some "translations" from 2ch words into normal japanese ones may be done, too.

good idea! although i don't have a pda, i can put it on my mp3 player and use the text viewer (^o^)

257 :=X:2005/07/27(水) 05:03:41
i think this story wouldn't have happened in America..
we don't have the tradition of giving お礼 for such things.

>>256
that'll do.
but if you want to read a lot of text more comfortably, i just recommend some cheap palm or ppc.
by the way, is your mp3 player able to display non alphabetical letters?

>>259
sorry, i wasn't clear enough!
i meant such things like the situation with the "train man".
in America, i don't think he would've been asked to give his address to send him a gift or anything..

>>260
i think japanese people are more trusting than americans.
in other words, we are more naive about believing in other people's good will.
that in turn makes it obligatory for us to return the good will.
oh, it's so hard to explain...

>>261
I don't know about that. I've lived in both the States and Canada,
and I felt they are more trusting than...
but then again, it's my highly subjective opinion.

I would say it's just cultural difference.
They just don't have a custom to give a gift
for "お礼" as =X pointed out.

in the mind of people.
anyway, i have to go now, too. see you all soon.

Dear Mr. >>230.

That my written English is almost like a native English speaker's,
was something an American online friend told me, I'm not just
praising myself like you are asserting in your post.

I do know myself that my English is not flawless, and YES, I do
practice all the time. Now, if you could be so nice to point out
those errors that I CAN'T SEEM TO FIND AT ALL in my post, I would
be very happy.

Best regards,
229

I won't deny your english is good. But I would've written it like this:
"Most would be able to keep up a normal conversation,
especially if the person they were talking to used simpler English than usual."
Just constructive criticism..

>>268
Well, that certainly is a good point,
must've been what >>230 referred to. Thanks.
I just get annoyed by many 2ch'ers destructive attitude.
They are only looking for others' flaws, unable to see
their own problems. Many are otaku and hikkimori, it is
fun to think about people like them lecturing others.

Perhaps I might have overreacted to your remark. But I cannot possibly tolerate anyone fancying himself as a master of English despite his limited skills, because I have dedicated myself to the language for years and years with no remarkable success.
Anyway, you see below your mistakes and dubious expressions.

1 'Japanese' → the Japanese
2 Verbs like keep up, hold, have etc. collocate with the noun 'conversation.'
3 A native American usually refers to an American Indian, therefore it should be either a true-born American or an English-speaking person.
4 than usually → than usual
5 so nice to → so nice as to
Do't take it amiss. Keep up a good study.

272 :=X:2005/07/27(水) 10:45:45
Well, I'm impressed by both of you, haha.
You know your stuff pretty well.
I knew 229 wasn't talking about an American Indian
because usually in the term "Native American", both words are capitalized..

Anyway, language is an ever changing thing, and I don't like to think the way I speak is governed by some set of "rules".
We can argue about grammar forever, but what's important is putting your feelings into words!

Boy, did I miss something!

>>271
You've had no remarkable success? Why is that?
I'm really impressed by your language capabilities!
It is not hard to understand that you have worked lot to use English like you are doing today.

Thanks a lot for correcting me.
I will remember what you told me, and hopefully be able to improve even further. One can learn much from critic.

>worked lot to use English like you are doing today
"worked lot to be able to use English the way you are doing today" was what I intended to write.

>>275
and you should also say "worked a lot".

277 :=X:2005/07/27(水) 22:48:07
are you guys students or something?
i know that in Japan, students learn English through middle and high school...
what did you think of English class in school?

>>277
i'm not a student. so i don't know in detail how it is now.
generally speaking, japanese teachers of english teach it
with more emphasis on grammar and reading comprehension.
so students know very well about english grammar and can read english quite well.
but they can't speak or write it so well.
these situations are gradually changing now and someday the day may come
when students speak english comfortably.

well, that's the thing. you're right that they aren't real english teachers, they're just native speakers.
the companies such as NOVA hire native speakers whether they are good teachers or not..
these workers usually quit after a short while, and the company simply hires more people.
it's not the fault of the people for being bad teachers, its the companies who aren't worried about getting quality teachers..
they're only worried about money.

I didn't know what the hell it was either, but after doing some searching, it appears to be one of those contracted terms that the Japanese language seems to like so much.

deliheal - (trans: delivery health) - prostitution; call girl business

I and Kaela were watching some TV program the other day.
Aoi Miyazaki were appearing on the program. when I carelessly said
'Wow She is very pretty, isn't she?', just then my Kaela got anger and burst into tears
Kaela ' does that mean that you cannot love me more and you love her?'
I ' oh, no. that means she is just simply pretty, you are more beautiful. and don't forget I'm your knight'
and i huggen her tightly and kissed her,
She went back to normal. Love is sometime difficult I understood.

Shouldn't some of the blame be placed on society as well?
Just curious.

I hear people in the U.S. or Europe often take time off to
work, travel and grow up. these experience will actually be
their advantage when they look for a job. In Japan, if you do
the same thing, it will be considered shameful. That means
what makes the year off experince shameful is the geography.

460 :shinji:2005/07/30(土) 22:05:53
Neet and Freeter are considered to be the most attractive/hot in Japan.
As soon as i said that I was a Freeter the other day
they(the girls) looked me differently. Suddenly there's a twinkle in their eyes,
and they eager to get my attention. Some girls even tryed to touch and rub my body and went like,
do you have a girlfriend? is there a chance to go out with me sometimes?" and all.
I have no idea why almost all girls are attracted to Neet and Freeter in Japan. It really weird.

This isn't the case at all! Well, certainly not around here in California. We are expected to
"memorize" 10-20 words a school week, but often times the words are words we already
know, such as "dissolve." Also, within a matter of weeks, the new words we learn are
forgotten with a few exceptions.

To be honest, I'd have to say the average highschooler knows only, um, 7,000 words. Yeah,
7,000 words sounds about right.

Then again, California has some of the worst schools in America.

That's such a seemingly arbitrarily chosen figure that it can't possibly be right. Not only that, you appear to be basing your conclusions on how things are for you personally.

The other possibility is that you're intentionally trying to give off an inaccurate picture of American youths. As an active Internet troll, I can't really say anything against it, I guess.

(I need to learn how to use this board better, hehe)

Anyway, yes, this figure is coming from my perspective, but I have yet to find a person in my school
who bothers to remember every single word taught to us in not just English, but also science, since
it definately does not feel like we would have learned 15,000 words in grades 1-12 in English alone.

you don't have to quote the whole post.... just point to the post you're responding to.

the words you learn don't come solely from your schoolwork, you know.
if you can read a novel without using a dictionary, chances are you know more than 7,000 words. at least.
then again, i dunno what the "average" high schooler is like where you're coming from..

>>since it definately does not feel like we would have learned 15,000 words in grades 1-12 in English alone

I bet you'd be surprised at just how large your vocabulary is. I mean, I wouldn't imagine that people think about it all that much... It's their native language; they just use it.

Gauging your ability and putting a concrete number on the measure of the extent of your vocabulary is probably going to seem weird no matter how high or low it is.

Anyway, sorry if my last post came off as brash.

Oh, thanks for the tip on using the board!

>>590

Yes, I guess that's true. But the figure of 15,000 certainly can't be true unless heavy studying for,
say, the SAT's. Perhaps one can make it appear that they know 15,000 through latin roots, but
memorizing 15,000 seems to unlikely~

Well, thanks for the fun discussion. Must be running off to get some food from our local supermarket! :D

593 :=X ◆pO6dphC4fw :2005/08/01(月) 12:32:59
>>592
no prob.
but even studying for the SAT isn't going to more than *double* your vocab from 7000 to 15000.
look at any SAT or even GRE book, and you'll only see a few *hundred* words at most;
and those are only there because they are difficult and aren't commonly used.

>>578

average japanese high school students preparing for university entrance exams know
about 6,000 to 8,000 english words.
so i agree with =x, 'cause native english speakers know a lot of words used in everyday life,
such as "zap" "pee", etc, other than ones they learn in school,
while non-native high schoolers don't know those words.
perhaps 12,000 to 15,000 words sound about right.

but it is often attached to the end of ボケ, perhaps for some rhythmic reason.

For English-speaking guys, 7,000 words don't strike me as a large vocabulary.
Even Japanese high-school kids are expected to learn several thousand words
by the end of a school.
On the other hand, as I pointed out, 1,5000 words seem equally unconvincing.
They also say educated English-speaking people have the vocabulary of 30,000.
What about your dads or uncles? Do they seem to know so many words? What they
usually read? Shakespear or John Milton?

Ive been looking at photosites alot lately to fill my one wall all with pictures of people and stuff.
I've looked on clothing sites on getting ideas of where to get my clothes for school,
Since im not allowed to get clothes from hottopic or anywhere gothy.
So i have come to the conclusion of pants from American Eagle.
Which happens to be a prep store, but my Mum is being very difficult right now
and she doesn't want me dressing differently because she claims shes protecting me from being judged.
Even before i dressed different, and before i was depressed, I was judged by everyone.

A thread like this is impossible on 2ch. The anonymity of this message
board kills any chance for real discussion. But just for the hell of it,
I'll try and start a topic and see how it goes.

Why do you think that most message boards in Japan almost encourage people
to post anonymously? On the other hand, why do most American or western
forums require registration to post?

I can try answer the question pertaining to the western boards〜
1) For identity security reasons. Wouldn't want people pretending to be someone else on a board, right?
2) If someone needs to be punished on a site for whatever reason (such as posting disgusting images), registration allows one to ban an account
instead of an IP, which is benefitial if the PC is being shared by multiple people or if someone is using a proxy.
3) To give people a larger sense of identity on a board
4) Often times, there are messaging systems on a site called "Private messages" or PM's. Very useful if you need to share sensitive information.

ugly face is a mere myth. there are very few truly ugly faces. most of the faces
are normal(not amazing beautiful but not ugly either) but if you dont care about
your face. it will turn from normal to ugly.

Have you thought about meeting people over the Internet? If you bond with a woman and build up a relationship with her before you even see each other, your physical condition won't matter as much. She'll already have feelings for you.

I'll just answer this in English since my German isn't good enough for what I'm about to say...
Everyone tends to select Spanish since it's labeled an "easy language"- where's the fun in that? Learning an easy language I mean.
Challanges are just more fun, including challenges in academics! Besides, tried Spanish once, and just... hated it for some reason >_>;;
And yes, I'm very interested in Japanese (blame FFXI for that), though my Japanese is very... weak at the moment.

I'll just ignore you kthxbai.

Yes, sir! *army salute* I refuse to reveal my name, but it is Indian (Asian kind). I am female (and very proud of it), and live in California!

Maybe it is a cultural thing- people that I know on the net tend to like new features on boards to tinker with. But that's just my online clique, so I can't speak for others.

Why would you like to know my shoe size? o.O;; Anyway, in American sizes, it's an 8-8 1/2. Fairly average.

Actually, around here, Asian American-Indians are very common! They seem to be the third most common minority.
And no offense taken in the religion question. I myself am not of any particular religion, but my mother is a Hindu. My father on the other hand is a Christian, but he's caucasian, so that is fairly expected.

As for why it's come to this historically, I don't know.
But I think westerners take their online individualities too seriously.
After all, you can also identify yourself on 2channel with a tripcode
if you really need. But when you need to register, you need to have
an e-mail account for that and one that you don't mind getting
spammed, etc. Even if you just want to make one single post you are
required to register at most western forums.
I think that's a hassle.

Also, personalities are pretty tedious and useless in online discussions.
Defending them, attacking them, the whole ad hominem deal...
That tends to get annoying, cliques form up, there's seniors that
automatically get respected, no matter what they say, ect...
That's usually just a source of useless drama. It's good that you can
avoid that on places like this.

>>630

Also, I don't think anonymity kills discussion. Quite the contrary,
since you don't have to mind the actual person, you can focus
on the subject of discussion better and come to an objective
conclusion easier.

I think posting as anonymous is just cowardly! it's has it's own advantages

Im reading now this book "All american girl" which is aimed at probably junior high school students or maybe highschool students,
since the main character in this book is a high school girl. With my vocabuluary( that test's result said I knew 6370 words )
I can read this book without missing the point. but the words i don't know are here and there, and there are some sentenses I can't understand
even after I re-read it again and again. Thinking that most of the readers of this book in the USA read it more easily than I do,
they know more than 7000 words. like someoneelse said, probably 1200 words or more, i guess.

I once taught English to the English. And The English, who
normally speak English, wanted to be called British despite
speaking English which is to be expected of the English.

The English speaing country of England is not only the
birthplace of the English language, but also has quite a few
English people who speak English to other English.

>>859

4-ch.net was created by people from iichan.net - iichan was created when 4chan.org died last year
4chan.org was created almost two years ago by people who liked 2ch and Futaba Channel and wanted an English Language Futaba

>>858

VIP board is a board where people make silly threads and have fun. It is like News4VIP
Lounge is a board for general discussion.

oh, is that so? then i can join both boards, too.

>>860
Who cares? People like 2ch and Futaba Channel on iichan as well.
Also, iichan doesn't have Japanese people banned like 4chan has.

>>863
4chan banned Japanese users because many of them would leech and not post. But Japanese IPs are welcome there
You just have to ask to be unbanned and they will unban you. But you have to have a static IP.

This is all because 4chan has not had the money to pay for huge bandwidth bills. But they do not dislike Japanese users.

>>863
That's only from 4chan.org and because when 4chan opened, people from Futaba Channel
rushed in and the bandwidth became too much for the servers. People can request
to have access, also.

>>864
It's still rude. It's also rude how they mangled KUMA into "Pedobear" and such.
I often see them talking about how "Japan should be nuked again".
They are mostly just trading porn and try to be as foolish as possible.

>>866

That is only on the /b/ board. The /b/ board is for morons. They like to say inflammatory things on purpose.
It is just trolling. However, the other boards are fine.

>>866
It is true that they are mostly foolish people, but you also have to understand that we
come from different cultures. The majority of posters may not have morals, but they also
tend not to take anything seriously. There are those of us, however, who respect other
cultures.

>>867
No, I saw that behaviour and the disrespect for Japanese culture on all boards.

>>869
There is a moderation staff to deal with things like that, to make it a better place
aside from /b/. It is true that some things may "fall through the cracks" but the overall
goal is to make it a good quality Image Board.

>>870
If people aren't able to perform self-moderation then such measures
are just babysitting and not getting to the core.
I heard the moderators on 4chan are all members from SomethingAwful.com
What they are doing on 4chan seems to reflect that very much.

>>871
You have to understand that it is a very different community there, what some might say
isn't a reflection on the site as a whole. As for moderators being all members from
somethingawful.com, this is entirely untrue.

>>872
I think you are just being defensive.

You advertised world4ch, I said I liked 4-ch.net better.
Then you turned this in some 4chan/iichan argument.
And now we are talking about just 4chan which is boring and lame and topic.

I'd never believe I'd say this but I'd much rather talk about Yukorin now.

>>873
It wasn't me who said those things about iichan, it was someone else.

I doubt any native speaker of English would say "so-so" in the situation
presented in >>904. Japanese people like to use "so-so" a lot, but in all
actuality, English speakers do not use it a whole lot. I'd reccomend using
"sort of" in that situation.

It is impossible to come up with a single word that will work as a translation
for 微妙 in any situation. It is impossible to do this for any word. The reason
for this is that depending on the situation, the meaning of a word slightly changes
and thus the word you need to use as a translation changes too.

I say English speakers don't use "so-so" as much as it seems a lot of
Japanese people think. It depends on the person, where they live and who
they hang out with, but generally "so-so" isn't as much as many people think.

The Japanese term "bimyo" as used in slangy expressions has gone out of proportion.
